Start with eight to ten minutes in the mild sauna
In order to achieve these positive effects, you have to have a proper sauna. „You shouldn’t stay in a sauna for too long and you have to allow yourself enough rest between sauna sessions,“ says Marco Riedel from the KissSalis Therme in Bad Kissingen. You should start with a milder sauna – such as a saunarium with 50 to 60 degrees. „Eight to ten minutes per sauna session is good.
Omit typical beginner mistakes
„Despite the lack of routine, beginners usually sit on the highest sweat bench and remain there much longer than necessary and beneficial.“ says Lutz Hertel from the German Wellness Association in Düsseldorf. The result: the risk of unwanted experiences and even circulatory collapse increases. Men especially sometimes developed a dangerous ambition.
Three sauna sessions in two hours
„You should plan around two hours for three sauna sessions – it’s not good to rush through too quickly,“ recommends Riedel. It is also important: “Anyone who feels uncomfortable in a sauna should leave earlier. And if the infusion in the top row is too hot for you, you should sit further down.
After the sauna
Fresh air, showers, rest „Afterward, exercise is good, preferably in the fresh air,“ says Riedel. Then you can slowly take a cold shower – but not too suddenly. „It’s good to slowly direct the shower jet from the right foot, leg and arm to the left side of the body and up to the heart.“ Then you should rest for 20 to 30 minutes. This phase can be followed by up to two further, hotter sauna sessions including exercise, showering and resting.
Alternating between cold and warm strengthens the immune system
If used correctly, sauna bathing can be good for your health. „Even the Romans noticed that warmth is something very pleasant,“ says Wolfgang Wesiack, President of the Professional Association of German Internists in Wiesbaden. „In fact, the heat alone in the sauna helps to relax the muscles.“ In addition, the sauna, as a place of rest, contributes psychologically to relaxation. Many people also rely on strengthening their immune system. „The process of taking a sauna – i.e. alternating between cold and warm – activates the immune system,“ confirms Wesiack
